What is an IOU note? An IOU (I Owe You) note is an acknowledgement written or printed on a piece of paper that you owe a debt to someone or something. A promissory note, like its name suggests, is a promise to pay back a debt and usually contains a date or deadline. Most IOU's are simple hand written notes between two people. IOU's have been in the news lately because the state of California is now issuing IOU's to pay its bills. However, these IOU's are not your ordinary IOU's because they pay interest to the recipient when they become redeemable.

Hey Jim, it does stand for I Owe You, people just used the letter "U" Because it sounds like the word "you". And when someone sees the three letters together "IOU" They pronounce the letters, which make the same sound as the sentence "I Owe You"
