IOU Note

What is an IOU note? An IOU (I Owe You) note is a promise written or printed on a piece of paper to pay back a dept. Most IOU's are simple hand written notes between two people. IOU's have been in the news lately because the state of California is now issuing IOU's to pay its bills. However, these IOU's are not your ordinary IOU's because they pay interest to the recipient when they become redeemable.

Pennies on the Dollar

Above is a photo that I think does a good job of illustrating the expression "Pennies on the Dollar". I like that we can see the word "DOLLAR" in the forefront of the picture. Notice that you can actually see the reflection of the word DOLLAR in the sides of the pennies. This photo will be an excellent choice to illustrate dollar news stories, because the "2009" on the penny insures the reader that this is a current, up to date story with a recent photo. I used shinny late model pennies for this photo. It turns out that the dates on these pennies were 2008, 2009, 2007.

I'm sure you've heard the expression or catch phrase "Pennies on the Dollar", but what does it mean? It simply means you can pay back a dept or buy an asset for a fraction of the original amount. A penny or pennies is a fraction of a whole dollar. Therefore, any thing less than a dollar would be a fraction of a dollar or "Pennies on the Dollar". And now with the economic downturn, the expression is being used more than ever before. Above is a photo of a beautiful cloud formation. Notice all the different types, colors, shades, shapes, textures of clouds.

How to appreciate cloud photos - Art Appreciation

First of all there are no rules on how to enjoy cloud photos. However, if you find cloud photos boring one of two things may be happening.

1. You may be correct and the photo may be a boring photo. The photo may be out of focus or the cloud itself may be boring. For example, if you zoom in too much into a cloud, then you will land up with just a white or gray photo slide. Just like if you have a blank piece of white paper and someone says it's a photo of a snow blizzard.


2. You may not be in the right state of mind. You have to consider the scale of clouds to fully appreciate them. Clouds are measured in miles and they are typically bigger than anything created by humans (skyscrapers, luxury cruise ships, oil tankers, sports stadiums, etc.). In addition, there is much detail in most of my cloud photos that you can't pick up in a quick glance. I suggest you sit down with a cup of coffee or your favorite snack before you start viewing my cloud photography artwork.

How To Make a Cockroach Trap

Why are cockroaches so disgusting?

Why do they give us such a visceral reaction when we catch one in the bathtub or scampering across the kitchen floor? I believe it is a safety mechanism that we humans have to detect potentially dangerous creatures. Sure roaches are not poisonous, but they often carry harmful germs that could be potentially hazardous to our health. Therefore, like our aversion to snakes and spiders, we are probably programmed to be cautious of the hideous cockroach. Now that we agree that it is worthwhile to get rid of roaches, let me show you a way to round them up. My trap doesn't kill the pests, so what you do with them is up to you. Some people fry them up and munch them down. See fried roaches or basket of fried roaches. Pretty disgusting huh?

If you are under 18 please ask your parents if it's ok to make a roach trap.

Ok, let's get started on our Cockroach Trap. Here's what you need:

Step 1: Find a large tin can or plastic bucket.

Step 2: Get a paper towel and buff the inside wall so that it is nice and smooth.

Step 3: Find a jar of Vaseline or petroleum jelly. No jokes about the petroleum jelly please. Place a light coat of petroleum jelly on the inside wall of the container.

Step 4: Find some dog food or cat food. Place a few pieces of pet food in the center of the container.

Step 5: Find a piece of cardboard. Place one end of the cardboard on the rim of the container and the other on the ground to create a ramp for your roach trap. The roaches will climb up the cardboard ramp and fall into your trap.

This is what you call "Cockroach Heaven" as he has just landed on enough food to feed an army of cockroaches. It's like winning 100 free cheeseburgers for the average American.

Step 6: Place your trap in a place known to have cockroach traffic.

Step 7: Go to bed and let your cockroach trap handle the night shift.

Step 8: Check your trap to see how many roaches you caught last night.

Update: I found that using a reflective tin can had some interesting results. It seems that the reflectiveness or shininess of the tin can confused or disorientated the cockroach. They didn't even attempt to scale the walls of the can. Therefore, I'm not sure if the petroleum jelly was even necessary.
